The Role of Water for Sustainable Hydrogen Production in Kazakhstan – Part I: Water management for the production of sustainable hydrogen
Keywords: Green hydrogen production, water management, hydrogen market in Kazakhstan, Central Asia, water nexus, sustainable water usage, production scenarios, hydrogen certification | Study published: December 2023
Kazakhstan has set the goal of becoming an exporter of green hydrogen in the future, as well as using the climate-friendly hydrogen itself to decarbonize the domestic economy and the transport sector. The sustainable use of water plays an important role in this. The study “The Role of Water for Sustainable Hydrogen Production in Kazakhstan” analyses the water nexus in Kazakhstan by examining the existing mechanisms of water management and highlighting the challenges for the country's water management. The study also analyses the impact of green hydrogen production in Kazakhstan and quantifies the volumes of water required.
An environmental impact assessment of green hydrogen production in Kazakhstan is essential and needs to specify the use of water along the whole hydrogen production value chain.

- Green hydrogen has the potential to set Kazakhstan’s economy on a green trajectory.
- The production of green hydrogen in Kazakhstan will be an additional challenge for the country’s water management system. The production of 1 kg of hydrogen requires between 15 and 30 litres of water.
- An environmental impact assessment of green hydrogen production in Kazakhstan is essential and needs to specify the use of water along the whole hydrogen production value chain.
