Status of Hydrogen and Potential for Cooperation - Australia, Germany, Japan, and Korea
Keywords: Hydrogen, hydrogen export, Australia, hydrogen import, hydrogen value chain, Japan, Korea, Germany | Study published: July 2024
Germany, Japan and Korea are on their way to becoming the world's largest hydrogen importers, while Australia has a good chance of becoming one of the world's largest hydrogen exporters. All four countries are very active and thriving at different, often complementary points in the hydrogen value chain. This interlocking of interests and competences offers the opportunity to move from the existing bilateral cooperation between each of these countries to a quadrilateral cooperation and thus fosters the growth of a global hydrogen market.
Germany is acutely aware of the importance of hydrogen for the continued success of its strong industrial sector and the vital nature of imports to meet its expected hydrogen demand.
- Low-carbon and particularly green hydrogen will be absolutely critical to the decarbonisation efforts of the four countries.
- In the case of Australia, Germany, Japan, and Korea, the countries’ expertise is distributed across the entire value chain, making multilateral cooperation particularly promising.
- The four countries have already recognised each other’s strengths and have established bilateral economic and political cooperation activities.
