Certification of green and low-carbon hydrogen - An overview of international and national initiatives

Keywords: Hydrogen, Trade, Certification, Energy Transition, Japan, Germany | Study published: March 2023

Green and low-carbon hydrogen are a crucial pillar of decarbonization strategies around the world. Since many industrialized nations do not have the conditions to produce enough hydrogen, global trade will be a necessary enabler for large-scale hydrogen application. To ensure that traded hydrogen will contribute to decarbonization, clear rules and standards as well as certification schemes are required as the foundation for this emerging hydrogen market.
This study explores existing as well as emerging regulations and initiatives in this regard around the world and identifies further potentials for international cooperation.

Global trade and clear certification standards are essential for the large-scale application of green and low-carbon hydrogen, which is crucial for decarbonization strategies worldwide.

  • Global trade and clear certification standards are essential for the large-scale application of green and low-carbon hydrogen, crucial for decarbonization strategies.
  • Leading hydrogen economies acknowledge the need for certification but differ in implementation and ambition, with varying CO2 emission thresholds.
  • Harmonizing international certification systems is vital for a global hydrogen economy, ensuring reliable investment frameworks for exporters.
