Habeck: ‘Germany and India are working hand in hand on green hydrogen’

During their 7th government consultations, Germany and India intensified their cooperation on the expansion of green hydrogen and signed a roadmap. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck emphasised that both countries want to work closely together on the development and international market ramp-up of green hydrogen in order to advance the energy transition and global climate protection.

India wants to position itself as a global hub and exporter of green hydrogen thanks to cheap renewable energy sources in the country. The country plans to build up a production capacity of five million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2030. For Germany, which according to its hydrogen strategy will need between 95 and 130 terawatt hours of hydrogen by 2030 and will have to import 50 to 70 per cent of this, the partnership with India is of strategic importance.

The Indo-German Green Hydrogen Roadmap aims to boost the global production, trade and use of green hydrogen. Germany and India are thus building on their long-standing energy partnership to jointly take a leading role in the future market for hydrogen and enable climate-neutral industrial development.
