Training Course boosts Green Hydrogen development in Mexico

The training course on green hydrogen, organized in collaboration with SIEMENS Energy, brought together over 100 decision-makers from the private and public sectors. The aim of the event was to drive market development in Mexico and positioning German technologies and companies as important players in this field. Green Hydrogen and PtX products have good opportunities both for application in the domestic Mexican market and for export to Germany thus contributing to the decarbonization of the industry and deepening trade relations. The decision-makers from the private and public sector were able to deepen their knowledge of the opportunities and challenges of green hydrogen and PtX products by participating.

Background

The Green Hydrogen training course was jointly hosted by the Mexican-German Energy Partnership and SIEMENS Energy. The course built on a previous cooperation from the International Hydrogen Ramp-Up Programme (H2Uppp). Green Hydrogen and PtX are seen as economic opportunities in Mexico and can play an important role in the country’s energy transition and the expansion of renewable energies. Given the sizable industrial base and its geographic location, the country has good opportunities to develop hydrogen projects and Germany can play a decisive role by providing know-how and technologies.

Challenge and Goal

Mexico has excellent conditions for Green Hydrogen and PtX projects due to its favorable geographic location. However, the country does not yet have an official hydrogen strategy nor pilot project. The course seeks to promote knowledge and support for Green Hydrogen development by deepening technical knowledge and bringing together decision makers from private and from public sector. The goal is to position Germany and German companies as key players in this process.

Action taken

Workshop of the opening module (hybrid), October 2024

In cooperation with SIEMENS Energy the Mexican-German Energy Partnership hosted a training course on the potential of green hydrogen and PtX. The objective of this course was to highlight the opportunities, challenges and technical solutions of Green Hydrogen for the Mexican energy transition. Experts of the private sector and researchers delivered 13 individual modules over 6 weeks focusing on technical solutions, social, environmental and economic impacts as well as practical session on Green Hydrogen project design.

By jointly hosting the course with SIEMENS Energy the energypartnership got to showcase German strategic interest as well as technology and knowledge in this topic. Nearly 100 participants from the public and the privates sector completed all modules and received a recognition.

The course was originally developed in the H2Uppp programme and was now adjusted and extended to also bring decision makers from the public sector and to foster the dialogue between business and government.

Impact

The course serves as a catalyst to deepen the knowledge and conversation on Green Hydrogen in Mexico. Most participants completed all 13 modules of the course and have received a recognition. 85% of the participants confirmed in an evaluation afterwards that the course is very useful and relevant for their industry/organization. 56% stated that they have acquired new knowledge and capacities that help them promote green hydrogen in their work due to the course.

Mexico does not yet have a national hydrogen strategy. By bringing together decision makers from the private and the public sector, the course provided a platform for exchange between key actors. It thus contributes to the development of a hydrogen roadmap, decarbonization of the Mexican industry and helps building political support for green hydrogen and PtX projects in the country.
